I agree that the best course of action would be to cut through the log and keep the trail exactly where it has been. That is standard practice for trail maintenance. The problem is that I don't see anyone with a chainsaw cutting this log or any of the others that have fallen across the trail in the past. In the meantime it looked like walkers and riders had already been going around the mess, making a new route whether we like it or not.

I have a gas chainsaw but I have to weigh the 3 hours of driving it takes to get it plus the risk that someone (neighbor, MATC, county, city) is going to hear it and not approve versus just moving the trail over 2 feet. If I had an electric chainsaw or if it was a major reroute it would be  different. I have a very large bow saw that I will dig out and try on the log sometime. If it is feasible I will cut it.

There are now two huge tree obstacles right next to each other that are blocking the outermost loop on the East side of the new trails.

I cut the smaller of the branches and moved it out of the way. The next time I'm out there I'll use a loppers to reroute the trail a couple of feet so it goes around the end of the remaining branch.
These trails are not official so I guess you can do that?
My only concern is making more diversions by disrupting what is growing there where they may not be needed.
Perhaps we can wait and get someone in there with the right tools to make things easier with what is already there instead of causing more trail making than needed?

In my non professional trail making opinion I think we should or could consult with trail making experts on what really should be done to improve these trails as things come up and/or as they are.

Somehow something doesn't sit right with me to make diversions around things when they may not be needed.
Why not cut through it instead?

    Get a chainsaw from somewhere.
    Boom.
    Done.
What is wrong with that option?
Is there a conventional wisdom for trail working when obstacles come up that shouldn't be there?
Work a way around or through them?

Whatever the consensus or majority says, if there is any, I guess I could go with that.

A few more fixes today. Rebuilt the little kicker on downhill slice. Also repaired what had become a rather rutted roller into a steep downhill bit just before the grotto. Finally, rebuilt some of the berm at the bottom after the roller. The dirt I mined for this was not as damp as I had hoped given the rain. Please be gentle with these segments until they have a chance to harden.

Thanks Mike for finishing it off yesterday, and for snapping this photo :)

Everything in the links has preliminary approval.  They vary widely in how much investment in time and money they would take to implement.  It will be interesting to see things progress and whether we can turn some of the low-hanging fruit into reality soon.

This is awesome. Have the potential MadBAT sites and new connectors on the map received some sort of preliminary OK from the city? The connector trails on the Southwest side that follow Mill Creek look really interesting.

A few years ago, a few local riders realized we could overcome the lack of available space in Madison by building many small off-road biking facilities rather than one big one, and the idea of the Madison Bicycle Adventure Trail System was born.  Since then, with the help of a grant from IMBA and alot of hard work from the folks at Madison Parks, MadBATS is ready for the public.  More details here.

With Parks' expanding cyclocross effort, and the first phase of the build-out at Aldo Leopold Park planned for next summer, good things are already happening.  What can you do to help keep the momentum?  There are three virtual public input sessions planned, on October 13, October 15, and October 28.  You can count on there being some folks who object to the plan being there; we need to make sure there are plenty of voices speaking in favor; just click on a date to register.  If you can't make a meeting, you can register your support in an email to madbat@cityofmadison.com.

This is huge step forward for local riding in terms of accessibility and demonstrating viability of infrastructure development.  Not only will these small facilities be a boon to the neighborhoods they are located in, and an option for more ambitious riders to link together, but will influence other municipalities to build their own facilities, and demonstrate the need for more and better facilities everywhere.

See you on the trail, and at a meeting!

Quick update here - I met Mike out there yesterday, and we agreed that making an easier option just to the left of the existing trail would be a good thing, and we broke ground. He had to leave after about a half hour though and I ran out of daylight so there's still quite a bit of digging and brush-clearing to do (it's mayyybe 40% done right now). I'll be going back out there again after work today to do more work.

P.S. - existing trail is NOT being altered so there'll still be the challenge option and nothing is going away
P.P.S. - Judging by the comments from the passerby this is going to be a well-received change
P.P.P.S. - There's a lot of good rocks around there so if lines permit I may make some divider rocks between the easy and hard sides into something the expert riders can enjoy
