Rear shock is Fox Performance 36 / Float DPX2. The bike is an enduro, but some sources call it a long-travel trail because of the geometry. 160 mm travel front and rear on the 29er.
With respect to geometry: this was probably the thing I paid the most attention to when choosing the bike. For now I'm comparing this to the hardtail cross-country bike I've been primarily riding for the last 6 years - 2014 Specialized Rockhopper. The bottom bracket height is 343 mm (rockhopper was 310 mm) so 20% sag will put it 1 mm higher. So, very, very similar bb height. And I don't believe cranks have gotten any longer in the last 6 years so one should think there should be no significant change in the size of rocks/roots that require you to think about pedal strikes, but it definitely happens a LOT more, usually on trails that I never had to think about before, including most beginner trails in the area.
With respect to riding technique considerations: rest assured I am very familiar with these things. Not my first rodeo.
I am familiar with suspension tuning at a high level from various sources on the internet but would not feel confident doing it by myself due to lack of experience, also because I lack the tools. Mostly wondering whether it's worth the money to bring it to a shop, or to invest in the tools, or to just ignore it and be more cautious with my pedaling.

OK, so with fall/winter coming in, I'm going to try and get as much fall riding as I can, so night riding is going to be a thing for me this fall (first time)...But I'm not sure which trails permit night riding.
So, rather than try and figure out what trails I "can" ride, it might be easier to tell me which ones I "can't" ride...
For example, I think Blackhawk closes at dark correct? But Camrock does permit night riding up to like 10PM correct?
Anywhere else?
Thanks!
Pleasant View allows night riding. If there is a curfew I am not familiar with it.
People ride Blackhawk and Pleasant View in the dark (and that's a reminder to start recruiting fat bike groomers). The important parts to remember are both close the gates at dark and for Blackhawk when scheduled events and programs are done, plus don't be in the way of scheduled events. It's also important to respect our the private land owner between the two properties and be a Blackhawk member if you ride both.
Your Blackhawk membership gives you gate info, and you can park outside of Pleasant View. If you park at the cel tower never crowd out the ability for a few service vehicles to be there. You can ride up to Pleasant View via the South Fork trail.

I’m not sure about the 10pm statement at camrock...
Yeah, I'm not 100% sure there....I just thought I read somewhere that Dane County parks close @ 10PM...I could be totally wrong about that though.

I’m not sure about the 10pm statement at camrock, but there is a restriction on the cliff edge trail. It runs fairly close to a residential property so we do not allow lights on that part of the trail.

Your chance to get in on the 2020 Fundraiser is drawing to a close! We haven't been able to hold our fundraising events this year, so this is our primary chance to raise money to keep improving the local trails. And, as if more great trails isn't reason enough to donate, you have a chance to win one of several great prizes: How about a custom Kona Shonky dirt jumper, a 2021 Giant Fathom 2, or a new Suntour fork? Or gear from Bell helmets or Club Ride? A gift certificate to Erik's?
Donate now, help the trails, and get a chance to win!

Not familiar with that bike either. Or rear suspension for that matter. But you shouldn't have to ride with it partially locked out. I'd take it to the shop where you bought it and explain what is happening. If it's an internet bike, I would go to one of our sponsor shops and offer to pay them to help you; they might do it for free but it's good form to be willing to pay. There are also innumerable videos and threads online about suspension tuning, if you've got time to try and figure out who knows what they're talking about.

Beginning Tuesday 9/22, our 2020 cyclocross rides continue at Hill Creek Park on Madison’s far west side. This new park offers some challenging terrain in an open prairie setting. The 1 mile loop reminds us a little of a mini Badger Prairie. This park is also a candidate for future MTB trails. Take a look and let Parks know what you think.
The Hill Creek CX course will be available for 1 week. Course direction is... clockwise!
Course map and park info:
www.cityofmadison.com/parks/find-a-park/park.cfm?id=1203This entire CX course series is suitable for all ages and abilities.
Please note: it’s time to finish up our rides at Olin Park by Monday/Tuesday this week. The Olbrich Park course is closed.
Mike Schrader here. Finally had a chance to check this thread out.
Nothing is planned there. I can see both sides.
"It's always been that way" so I guess it has never been questioned.I know at the top of Sandy Climb there is the hardest route that is straight up and
an easier way to right. I often take the easier way. That being said I am open to a short section around that spot. I would still like to see a challenging spot but not has hard as what is there now.
I would love the help. Would you want to meet me out there this week to check itout? 7 am , before work or lunch time. My evenings are busy right now. Thursday is the only one free.
email me at
michael.schrader@madcitydirt.com and we can work something out.
