    Colorado or Utah...

In all honesty though I don't think you are going to find that spec locally.

I think it will be difficult for you to rent a bike as there are little shops available for it ,so you have one option you can take your friend bike,if he has and pay him or you can also buy a second hand bike at less price if you have financial problem.

buying a fixed gear road bike form CA is pretty much the same as renting a full suspension MTB in Madison right?

What about snow-bike rentals?  Any local shops doing that?  Looks like it might be fun to try one -- but I'm certainly not willing to commit to buying at this point.

PS regarding buying bikes -- I'm just now getting around to thinking about upgrading from my circa 2002 Rockhopper to  one of those new-fangled full suspension bikes; or maybe even those big, fancy 29 inch tires.  This probably means that I'm still ten to fifteen years away from buying a fat bike.  Perhaps I'll catch-up someday.

You can rent a Surly from the store in La Grange (John Muir trails), at least there were some the last time I was there.

Jeff at the Camrock Cafe has some surly pugsleys for rental. $40 per day ( might be able to wheel & deal on half day).

CamRock Sport has both Pugsley's, Neck Romancer, and Moonlander for rent. I think they are all $40 a day for rental.
They also have snow shoes, and XC Skis if anyone wants to try out those sports without committing the $ to buy.
