QR new climb cut in....and beer

Didn't try the wash but it's just a little stripe of it. That turned out to be a cheap lesson on why not to wear shorts when trailblazing.

I'm pretty encouraged by the way the new line looks - uses the bottom of the rerouted ambulance climb where it actually had some reasonable sweep away from the fall line to it, then moves to the right.  Still some good climbing (you still have to get to the top!) but with a bit more variation in the pitch, and a nicer ride through the woods.

There is a lot to do to clear the ground and brush before we can actually start benching trail in, but we've cleared the way except for the very top stretch.  If we can get a decent crew for a few more evening sessions this thing can get done for the bulk of summer riding.  Even if you're like me and dig riding the sandy climb, this will be a nice additional option to mix things up for you.  If you're a QR rider, please help us get this done.

I went out and rode/hiked the new climb, quick question, The spot where it looks to have a 3ft dip towards the top, will that be bridged or will the path go through the dip?
I'd like to help get the climb worked out, anyone wanna go there Saturday 7/21 am?

Sorry, but some of us are making the Blue Mound event happening on Sat, and there's a race that day too so labor might be scarce. I can try for Sunday or week day after work next week.

I'd like to help but unfortunately I'll be gone from wednesday on. I'll be out there tonight though, where does the new climb start?

I appreciate your initaitive to get the necessary work done. Please make sure that Jeff and Brendan are aware of your intentions and that they align with the their plans. I know Jeff has had a few ideas since the last work day.

As of about May, the new climb was somewhat abandoned for the season. We have some new ideas to build the climb to make it more sustainable, and working on the existing route would not be a good use of time.

The next step is to clear some of the honeysuckle to better assess the slope and find the best route. We can then lay out some options for the new climb and find the best alternative. The new climb will probably be built next spring.

If you want to help clear the brush and work on the new climb, watch the forums.

skota wants to start building the climb this weekend and I'm in. It looks like it has been flagged. Does anyone know the status? I know there was a big push to do it earlier this summer but I'm not sure how far it got.

    Thanks,
    Tom

I'd strongly, strongly encourage we look at the much longer line JeffB had proposed at one point (he sent me a map, I don't know if it ever got posted) rather than the thing we started to cut in this spring.  I'm not sure if that's what's been flagged.  What we cut in has some improvement at the top - but I looked the other day and have to conclude that most of it is just more of the same.  And definitely not a beginner's alternative to the sandy climb.  Jeff's idea creates a sustainable climb, considerable distance, and a good deal less intense.

I saw that map too, the new longer route that is. Lets try to get together to look at it next week.

Agreed. Wednesday night works for me, around 630. Does that work for everyone else?

Wednesday at 6:30 works. Let's meet and talk about things. My previous location for a longer climb may not be the best option, so I don't want to post a map. Brendan and I did some scouting and we think there are even better places.

Let's spend a lot of time planning before building and find a sustainable and fun route. Then, let's organize a trail day to build it!

[/quote]That is always the best idea. An one we all fail at frequently. Good planning can make for a much better build. And a much more sustainable and therefore long life trail as well.
