Flagging, Building, and riding this weekend

    November 17, 2012, 07:11 PM

If I can reduce my kid count from the 4 and 8 year old to just the 8 year old, I will bring up the latter with me for some clean up.  We won't have much time, but will bring our own gear to get done what we can.  Probably will get there between 9 and 10.

I am going to get up there today around 1:30, with my eight year old, to do some clean up on the new trail.  We won't be there for long, but if you are on a bike, watch out for us.  Any further work days planned for this section?

A few people will be out at QR this Sat. to clear some corridors.  I'll be sawing from 8-10amish... at least.  The more people the more trail cleared.

Is the tool box going to be open?  I broke a handle on my loppers up there on Friday getting carried away with some trimming on the new clearing.  There seems to be a lot of new bits of trails showing up that could use some finishing touches.  I will get up there if I can but will likely be with a kid again.  Still, he is pretty excited about swinging the axe at the small stumps.

I'll make it. I'm bringing a brushcutter with steel blade so we can trim those little stumps right to the dirt. I might be marking new trail, too, so we have plenty to clear on Saturday.

We need people to help clear cut brush and rake/smooth the cleared corridor. Some of the new corridor needs to be trimmed wider in spots to fix a few corners that are too sharp. Any help would be appreciated.

I should be there to help out. Rode QR a bunch over the summer, but this will be my first time for work here.

Where are you clearing? If I can get out there I'll probably have my 4 year old son with me. He can pick up sticks. If we can make it we wouldn't be able to get out there until late morning or just after lunch. How late are people going to be working?

I'll be there with my 5 year old 8-11am ish on the bottom trails by the wooden bridges.  We will be cutting brush on the newly flagged trails with a chainsaw.  I can keep 4 dudes busy pulling out brush behind me... this is super helpful.  Pulling brush is the hardest work, wear thick crappy clothes, eye protection and ear plugs.

Jeff B can give assignments, but improving the brand new trail by smoothing and removing stabs (stumps) needs to be done, this is easy with a few dudes.

Tom Holiday will be there late morning/ early afternoon and he has a killer new downhill section that needs work.  This section is going to be sweet.  Jeff B also knows this location and trail needs, I don't.

If someone gets there to help and isn't sure what to do, just raking the bumpy new trail by the wooden bridges would help.  Cutting the eye ball pokers away with a hand lopper/ cutter would be great help also.
Corp tool box will be open, but I try to bring my own tools as a backup... this way I can help on my own time.

Good chance that I can make it again with the 8 year old.  He works well and plays well with others better than I do.

Great post. In addition, a good set of leather gloves would help out, too.

I plan on being there at or slightly before 8. I'm going to open up the toolbox and haul some tools over to where we are working. Come right back to the trails near the wooden TTFs and you will find us. Or just listen for a chainsaw.

Great progress today. Thanks to everyone who showed up. There were 8-10 of us for most of the morning.

We finished clearing all of the red on the attached map. It is ready to ride. We closed the double track in this area.

We also fully cleared the corridor for the green area, and it is rideable and open right now. It needs a little bit more raking and it will be fully open.

The next yellow area on the map after the TTFs was rough cleared. It is not open and should not be worked on. We will be doing some flagging and part of it may change. I think part of it is on the fall line and it may get a slight reroute.

We will be flagging new trail in the next week. Then, we will plan another work day to clear the next section. The next section will probably look something like the purple on the map, although we will find out more once we start climbing through the woods.

I am all for the twisty mileage that we have been adding but I am going to miss the faster pedaling pace in that tight stuff. Maybe in the purple area there could be a couple of longer straight aways that allow some harder and faster pedaling. Of course that would require some good berms to send you back in the other direction.
