I know this may be obvious, but you'll want to bring the following at a minimum (yes I'm a "list guy"):
- long pants/jeans (long sleeve shirt would also help with bugs and thorny plants)
- sturdy footwear, preferably boots
- work gloves
- bug spray... mosquitoes aren't terrible right now, but starting to get worse. I haven't seen any ticks yet where we're working
- water
Walter is going to pick up some beer and brats, so we'll grill out for lunch. You may want to bring a snack, and your own beer if you don't have faith in Walt's beer divining abilities.
As previously stated, we're meeting at the trail head, which is at the swimming pool parking lot. The lot is going to be pretty full, and there is a tent set up for the trail run that is happening concurrently. We’ll be the people not in trail running outfits. We’ll sign waivers, go over safety, hand out tools, etc. If we have access to the gator (we probably won’t) we can use that to shuttle the tools to the work site, which is a 15 minute hike.
The corridor is mostly clear. Any fallen trees on the path should already be cut up and easy enough to move with one or two people. If you can't move something, get someone to help or just work around it.
The goal for the day is to rough in as much of the trail as possible. This means raking/cutting away the vegetation and leaves and popping small rocks out, about 3' wide, but not doing any bench/leveling work (unless we have a huge turnout). We’ll be using rogue hoes mostly. I've painted red/orange lines where I estimated the tread is going to go, so use those as a reference. I may not have been perfect so if you have questions, feel free to ask, or just use your best judgment.
There are two turns, we’ll be skipping those as one is staked out, and one is not yet staked.
It's possible that the trails will open to bikes by Saturday afternoon, so if you’re at all interested in riding afterwards, bring your bike. Just keep in mind that we'll be away from our cars for several hours. I was out there last night and it was still pretty squishy in a few areas, but a day and a half of nice weather can work wonders.
